Description
3M Thinsulate provides both thermal and acoustic insulation in one easy-to-install product! Thermal insulation keeps your van warm or cold and the acoustic insulation keeps the van quiet from road noise and ambient noise. In addition, Thinsulate helps to "dampen" the vibration of the sheet metal of your van similar to using sheets of butyl sound deadener like Noico. This allows you to either omit that type of butyl sound deadening entirely or use much less and save on time, money and weight.
Unlike many other insulation products, Thinsulate is manufactured specifically for the purpose of insulating vehicles and therefore has the following advantages:
- Hydrophobic fibers resist moisture, mold and mildew
- Flame resistant and meets FMVSS 302 certified motor vehicle safety standards
- Lightweight material perfect for vehicles. Thinsulate acoustic insulation is made from lightweight polyester and polypropylene non-woven fibers (details in a PDF
)
- Easy to cut and install
- Does not off gas and has no noticeable odor
- Can be removed easily if necessary for modifications or repairs
- Cruelty-Free Product (Vegan). "No sheep were harmed in the making of this product"
- Does not have a "Barn" Smell like wool.

The Cool Science How Thinsulate Absorbs Sound To Quiet Your Ride
Sound (noise) is transmitted as waves through the air which oscillate at varying frequencies. When these sound waves interact with the super fiber weave of our 3M Thinsulate material, the friction converts their "acoustic energy" into heat and deadens the sound to quite your ride!
A Word About Compression from 3M (and Vanlife Outfitters)...
3M Thinsulate(TM) comes compressed from the factory (Vanlife Outfitters also ships it compressed). The SM600L is typically about 1/2" to 3/4" thick when it comes off the roll. It will expand over time but can take a number of weeks. It is best (and easier) to install it compressed and let it expand after it is in place.
Installation
- Thinsulate can easily be cut to shape with sharp fabric-type scissors.
- You can roll out the sheet of Thinsulate down the full length of the center of your van's floor. Then, use the excess material to fill in the spaces around the edges of the floor. The double scrim helps the Thinsulate to slide easily into place.
- Generally, you won't need to use any adhesive for install, as your plywood floor will be secured down on top of the Thinsulate and keep it in place.
- Many people report that their entire van can be insulated in a single day with Thinsulate.

I’m happy to give a shout out to VanLife Outfitters. These folks are an incredible example of how a company should conduct business. Although I’m building a truck camper, I have bought several things from VanLife outfitters and their customer service is bar none . I would never hesitate recommending VanLife outfitters to anyone whether they are building a van camper or boat. And I might add even a tiny home. Everyone that I’ve talked to have been nothing but incredible. In particular, Jason in technical support was an incredible blessing to me. I had a problem with the Aqua Hot Gen 1 heater I bought from them. It was not the heater fault, but something I did. Jason helped bird-dog the solution and together we got it fixed. He stuck with me, did research, and called me back several times to make sure that the problem was resolved. These people know the business, many have their on rigs, which gives them the best experience. Thanks you Vanlife Outfitters!!!!

My husband and I are doing our first vanbuild. As rookies, we have found Vanlife Outfitters to be a trusted resource for ease of product shopping and purchasing, video demonstrations, guidance and excellent customer service. They were particularly a great one-stop shop when building our electrical system.

I ordered most of the parts for my sprinter conversion from them. They have absolutely the best customer service. I had issues with my fridge installation duing the weekend and eamiled their customer service for help. Both times, they emailed me back with the instructions/help I need on Sunday. Thank you and this is absolutely my go to place.
