What kind of solar/electrical system do you need in your rig? We recommend a 3-part evaluation.

Step 1: Figure out your needs with a load calculation. We have a detailed blog post including sample load calculations you can use for this step. This exercise will really help you with the next two steps!

Step 2: Make a foundational decision on the type of system you'll be building. We've narrowed this down for you to four basic approaches/architectures - all of which use lithium type batteries. and each one has a detailed blog post, free example wiring diagram, and, for the Victron-bases systems, a discounted Victron Energy product bundle that you can configure to your specific needs. You'll save a bundle with our bundles! You can think of this as the primary components.

Step 3: Add on the "accessories" that you need for your particular system with our discounted accessories bundle that includes everything from shore power inlets to circuit protection and wiring. These are the products that will tie everything together into a fully functional power system!

Victron Energy Bundle (Internal BMS Batteries)

$1,519.00

  • Savings start around $400!
  • This Victron Energy bundle comes with the core components that we recommend in our example power system blog post that uses “drop-in replacement” batteries with internal battery management systems (BMS) lithium batteries such as Victron SuperPack, Renogy, Battleborn, SOK, etc. We also have an example wiring diagram.
  • You can see the calculated discount/savings by scrolling down to the “options price” shown in red below the options.
  • Please see complete details about what’s included in the description below.
  • World-class support. We’re here for you when installing, configuring and using your system!
  • The more options you add, the bigger the savings! For instance, if you add a solar charge controller, a DC-DC charger and 4x batteries, you save nearly $700.

What's Included & Customization

This bundles include a single Victron Energy Lynx Distributor, a BMV-712 Battery Monitor, and the MK3-USB adapter required for configuring your MultiPlus Inverter/Charger. You can use the following options to upgrade, add or customize your bundle components. Please scroll down below to view the options with complete details in the description area.

You can choose between the 12/2000/80, the older (original) version of the 12/3000/120 or the newer MultiPlus II, 12/3000/120. For the 3000 model, most customers are choosing based on which size/form factor works best in their build. The features between the original and new version are nearly identical but the newer version has lower standby power consumption. The last option (12/3000/120 2x 120) is primarily for larger rigs with 50 amp, two-phase (240 volt) service.

Need help knowing what size solar charge controller you need? Check out this awesome calculator.

If you want a simple and effective battery monitoring option with a display panel that you can access with the Victron Connect app via Bluetooth, you can choose the "Victron Energy BMV-712 Battery Monitor" option. If you want a fancier monitoring option with a color touch screen interface that can connect up to your inverter/charger, solar controller and other sensors, you can upgrade your bundle to the "Upgrade to Cerbo GX with GX Touch Monitoring". This option omits the BMV-712 battery monitor and the Digital MultiControl remote panel for the MultiPlus inverter/charger and adds the 500 amp SmartShunt for battery monitoring instead and also adds a Cerbo GX and your choice of either the 5" GX Touch 50 touchscreen or the 7" GX Touch 70 touchscreen.

Orion DC-DC chargers allow you to connect your van's battery to the "house" batteries to charge them while driving. They can charge your battery at 30 amps and you can use two or more in "parallel" for 60 amps of charging capacity. We typically recommend 1x or 2x of these units running in parallel with stock/factory alternators in cargo vans. If you have dual factory alternators/batteries, you could consider using 2x on each battery/alternator for a total of 4x units.

Some installers will combine an Orion DC-DC charger with a Smart CL 12/100 BMS which can be used ONLY for its "current-limited charging" capability without the BMS functionality. This is a particularly good option if you have a factory secondary alternator such as a Ford Transit van. If you add this option, we'll provide a CL 12/100 unit, a 125 amp mega fuse and the M8 battery cable you'll need to make the unit think there is a happy battery bank connected. The 125 amp fuse is for charging up to 100 amps. If you prefer a smaller fuse rating, please leave us a note when checking out!

Add Batteries

This bundle can be used with most "drop-in" lithium batteries such as Battleborn, SOK, etc. These types of batteries have internal BMS systems to protect them from over/under voltage or under/over temperature. If you don't already have batteries, we offer two great choices below at great prices! As a general rule of thumb when using internals BMS batteries, we recommend one battery per 1000 watts of inverter rating. So, if you are ordering a MultiPlus 12/2000/80 inverter/charger you'd want at least 2x batteries. If you are ordering a MultiPlus 12/3000120 inverter/charger, you'd want at least 3x batteries.

Victron Energy SuperPack batteries are Victron's internal BMS lithium battery option. Price includes shipping for each battery.

SOK lithium batteries are a great value battery with built-in Bluetooth and heater (model number SK12V206H). Price includes shipping for each battery.

Description

Bundle Includes The Following with FREE Shipping

Your Choice Of Monitoring/Inverter Control Options

1) If you want a simple and effective battery monitoring option with a display panel that you can access with the Victron Connect app via Bluetooth, you can choose the “Victron Energy BMV-712 Battery Monitor” option. That option comes with the Digital MultiControl remote control panel for the inverter/charger which allows you to turn the MultiPlus inverter/charger on/off, put the inverter into charger only mode and also quickly set the maximum current the inverter should use from whatever shore power connection you’re using so that you don’t trip the breaker.

2) If you want a fancier monitoring option with a color touch screen interface that can connect up to your inverter/charger, solar controller and other charging devices like an Orion DC-DC charger, you can upgrade your bundle to the “Upgrade to Cerbo GX with GX Touch Monitoring”. This option omits the BMV-712 battery monitor and adds the 500 amp SmartShunt for battery monitoring instead and also adds a Cerbo GX, the GX Touch 50 screen.

One VE.Direct cable is included with the Cerbo GX monitoring upgrade to connect the SmartShunt to the Cerbo GX. Be sure to add additional VE.Direct cables (3′) for your solar charge controller if you have one (or more) and any other VE.Direct capable Victron Energy devices. Note, you can use a standard Ethernet cable (UTP cable) to connect your inverter/charger to the Cerbo GX using the VE.Bus.

This upgrade also omits the Digital MultiControl remote control panel for the MultiPlus inverter/charger from the bundle. Why? While it is possible to combine the the Cerbo GX with a Digital MultiControl in a system, if you have both, the ability to switch the MultiPlus on/off or set it into charge only mode from the Cerbo GX is removed. The same applies to the input current limit: when there is a Digital MultiControl in the system, the input current limit cannot be configured from the Cerbo GX.

Optional Add-Ons

Please see our terms & conditions regarding electrical and power system products. Many of our customers are DIY van builders but, if you're not familiar with power systems, you might consider hiring a ABYC or Victron Energy certified professional to assist with this part of your build. The team at Vanlife Outfitters is happy to answer any product questions but we do not assist in system design or configuration or troubleshooting for free. However, we do offer a wide range of example power systems and other informational content. If you need help understanding power systems, designing your particular power system or troubleshooting issues, we offer consulting services for camper van electrical systems.

Unlike most retailers (we're looking at you, Amazon), Vanlife Outfitters is committed helping our customers in any way we can and we have free information on our site including detailed example power systems. We would love to sit on the phone with each and every one of our customers while they figure out how to install their system or if they wired something incorrectly but we would need to hire a team of electricians to do that and, frankly, we would rather keep our prices low and offer paid consulting instead.
