What kind of solar/electrical system do you need in your camper van? Some tips below!

If you get stuck or have questions, our team is here to help! Email us a service@vanlifeoutfitters.com or call us at 754-444-8704 extension 2.

Step 1: Figure out your needs with a load calculation. We have a detailed blog post including sample load calculations you can use for this step. This exercise will really help you with the next two steps!

Step 2: Make a foundational decision on the type of system you'll be building. We've narrowed this down to three basic approaches/architectures - all of which use lithium-type batteries, and each one has a detailed blog post, free example wiring diagram, and, for the Victron-based systems, a corresponding kit/bundle of products that you can configure to your specific needs. You'll save a bundle with our bundles! You can think of this as the primary components and the products in the bundle are specific to the architecture/system design you've chosen.

Step 3: Add on the "accessories" that you need for your particular system with our best price accessories bundle that includes everything from shore power inlets to circuit protection and wiring, and our solar components bundle that includes everything from mounting brackets to solar extension cables and charge controllers. These are the products that will tie everything together into a fully functional power system but are not specific to a particular example wiring diagram/architecture.

Example: in this blog post, where we compare a "traditional" Victron-based system to an EcoFlow Power Kit, we have some video screen captures from our store product pages showing how we configured our internal BMS bundle and our accessory bundle to get a close comparison. These screen capture videos are helpful to see how versatile our bundles are and how you might configure them.

This choice determines which base kit you receive and the cost of the kit. The Nations secondary alternator in this bundle ships with the correct mounting and other hardware/parts for your specific vehicle. Be sure to choose carefully! Please contact us with any questions! Note, that the 48-volt alternator does not work with the Mercedes secondary alternator bracket (the N62 bracket), so, if you order the option below labeled "Sprinter 2.0L, 4 Cylinder Diesel (2023+)" you will have to remove the N62 bracket which is simple - just 4x bolts - and use the remaining parts from the Nations kit to install the 48-volt alternator. It's a little less expensive since less kit parts are included. Sorry, at this time there is not a compatible bracket for 2014-2021 Promaster vans.

Choose between the MultiPlus II 48/3000/35 or the larger MultiPlus II 48/5000/70. Our example wiring diagrams show the 48/3000/35. If you choose the 48/5000/70 you should use 2/0 AWG wire between the Lynx Distributor and the MultiPlus DC supply for up to 5 meters of cable length. See manual for details.

Please choose how many VE.Direct cables you need. You'll typically need one VE.Direct cable for each SmartSolar charge controller in your system and for any other VE.Direct devices such as the Orion XS 50 Amp DC-DC Charger. If you need a longer version of this cable, you can find them here in our store.

$0.00

We offer the following choices with the bundle. Both of these are capable of charging a 48-volt battery bank. If you need something larger the 150/40 or 150/60-tr are also 48-volt capable. When designing your solar array, you'll likely want to wire the panels in series so that the voltage coming into the controller high enough to effectively charge your batteries - particularly in less-than-optimal conditions. Keep in mind that the solar panel input voltage must be at least 5 volts higher than the battery bank voltage. In this system the batteries may sit anywhere between 52 and 58 volts.

$0.00

The bundle includes two of these VE.Bus/VE.Can cables which will be used to connect the MultiPlus inverter/charger to the Cerbo GX (VE.Bus) and to connect the Lynx Smart BMS to the Cerbo GX (VE.Can). Below you can choose the length of these cables.

$0.00

The Victron Smart lithium NG batteries have round, 3-conductor M8 cables on them that are wired to each other when creating a battery bank. Then there is one set of extension cables that runs from the daisy chained battery/bank to the BMS. Please choose the length of cables you need for this below.

Description

What’s Included

48-Volt Nations Secondary Alternator with Wakespeed WS500 Regulator

The Nations 48-volt kit includes the 100 amp alternator, mounting brackets/accessories (base price does not include alternator until you select your vehicle), and the Wakespeed WS500 Pro regulator (with Bluetooth) that will ship pre-configured for your system. We also include the Wakespeed “Van Harness” that you’ll need for a complete system.

A quick note on Mercedes Sprinter N62 bracket: The general consensus (Nations, our installers, reports from the internet) is that the 3-belt system that is used by Nations in their kits for Sprinters without the N62 “factory secondary alternator bracket” are better than the N62 version. In fact, we’ve heard of reports from Nations that some people who paid at the dealership for the N62 bracket have taken it off in favor of the 3-belt option.

Victron Energy 48V Smart Lithium NG Batteries

State-of-the-art lithium batteries featuring high-capacity, small form factor, and CAN bus communication with the Wakespeed regulator for fast, reliable, and safe recharging. These are 100Ah at 51.2 nominal voltage.

This is a handy, compact way to add a secondary positive bus bar for smaller loads/chargers in the system that is downstream from the main bus bars (Lynx Distributor) as we show in our example wiring diagram.

2x Victron Energy 48/12/30 DC-DC Converters

These are used to convert the 48-volt power from your battery bank into 12-volts for “standard” loads like Maxxfans, water pumps, refrigerators, lights, etc. Each Orion can support 30 amps for a total of 60 amps for your 12-volt loads.

Victron Energy Lynx Smart BMS

The Lynx Smart BMS NG is a combination of the BMS (battery management system) for your batteries, a battery monitoring shunt, and an integrated 500 amp “contactor” (main disconnect switch) that can be triggered by the batteries when needed or manually to disconnect the system from your batteries.

Victron Energy Lynx Distributor M10 and Lynx Power In M10

This system uses the Lynx Power In M10 to wire the batteries into parallel and the Lynx Distributor M10 as the DC bus bar with locations for four DC fuses for all your charging and load circuits. It will monitor the status of each fuse, and indicate its condition with a LED on the front. Part of the modular Lynx distribution system.
